Comments... Bradley started showing back-end weakness and hip sway 1 1/2 to 2 years ago so we took him to the vet. We got him a ramp. The vet talked about "demyelinizing" disease 1 1/2 to 2 years prior to his death, but did not know of specific treatment options other than watchful waiting and rimadyl for his hips. Bradley did very well and was able to walk until the day of his death, but went down quickly. He never seemed to be in pain.

Comments... We think that for Kayla DM was delayed and progressed slowly (onset at about 13 years) due to the fact that she was always kept in good physical condition (good nutrition, ideal weight) and that she always had plenty of outdoor activity and exercise. While we cannot complain about her longevity this disease is baffling- she didn't seem to be in pain but toward the end she couldn't move properly or control her bathroom functions. We miss her terribly already but we know that 15+ years is remarkable for a GSD.

Comments... Max was the most gentle giant ever, he was a therapy dog for handicapped children and when he got to the point of unable to use hind legs any more a wonerful woman from Florida donated a wheelchair and again he was able to preform his duties but now with rubber round back legs like the childre he served. We struggled with having him put to sleep but you know by the look in their eyes when they are ready to go home and thats what Max did to us on Jan 6th 2006. He now is in our mind and hearts always and sits on the fireplace mantle in his urn. He even still goes camping with us. We have another GS mix and so far no signs of DM. My heart goes out to anyone dealing with this awful disease.
