Comments... I "bought" Shelby as an 8 wk old pup from animal group in BLACKSBURG, VA in 1988. The group was working outside a K-Mart, inside that cold, wet February evening. She was the best dog EVER!! Just like in the Disney film "Ata Girl, Kelly." When she was about 5-6 y.o. the vet in VA told me she had hip dysplasia. We moved to NM in 1999. Shelby began dragging the top of her left rear foot-- eventually she would drag both, wore down her nails, developed sores on the top of her rear paws. I purchased paw covers with nail slots for the nails to go through to protect her from the abrasion of the dragging. My vet in Cruces identified the DM. I got Shelby a wheelchair so she could still go on walks and chase her beloved tennis balls. Unfortunately there was NO water close enough for swimming. She was an awesome swimmer!! Shelby became totally incontinent, she still dragged herself around the house. I knew she was completely humiliated by her inability to control her bowels. I had to express her bladder throughout the day. Then, I became pregnant. I knew we would not be able to keep this lifestyle going... for any of us. My kind vet told me to call her when I was ready. She said I could call as often as I needed, change my mind as often as I needed, too. We finally decided to free Shelby in November 2000. My vet came to our house. We let our other dog say "goodbye" to Shelby, too. Hardest thing I have ever had to do... I TRIED to find somewhere for her body (prior to the euthanasia decision)to go... I thought SOMEONE must want to do research!!! But I found no one. SO she was cremated. And, she was just a pup from a K-Mart in rural SW Virginia.... thanks.

Comments... we took this dog for acupuncture and lazar treatments. We gave her co10 , vit b, vit e , Asa, some homeopathic drugs. Exercised her daily, built her ramps, put rubber marts on all the bare floors ( so she could maintain her footng) she remained with us for a good year and a half after diagnosis.

Comments... I do not know if it was DM or not...she was a hard working dog and could easily have injured her back. But as I had no intention of doing painful surgery on an old dog, I did not bother to find out. She had also had mammary cancer a few years back, so it could have lodged in her back. No way to tell, and the university declined her body for study.

Comments... Missie T was a delight to live with! Her temperament was impeccable. She was a happy girl, loving life, the world and everyone it. She was a sweet gentle girl with NO faults. She did test positive on Dr Clemmons DM Flash Test when she was 4 1/2 years old. I caught the early warning signs, having had a DM dog previously.(Another person probably wouldnt have picked up on it for at least another year.) I put her on Dr Clemmons DM program, she went into remission for a long time, she lived another 6 1/2 years on his program, walking until the last 2 months, when her Eddie's Wheels cart became her legs. Missie T, my love for you will last throughout eternity. My good, sweet girl, we all miss you so very much. We will meet again, one day...

Comments... I am the breeder of this dog and the sole owner. She was 11 1/2 when she was euthanized because of DM and the problem getting around since her rear was so weak.
Her mother's litter brother also was euthanized from having DM when he was just 2 months short of 13 yrs old.
