My beloved Thumper has DM (also "confirmed" with DNA testing), and the disease has progressed rapidly the last couple of weeks. He's losing control of his bowels, and I don't know where to turn. Comments: I was unable to use your email buttons for some reason; please add me to the newsletter list...also, I think my vet would be eligible for your vet list (again, those email buttons!). If you contact me, I'd be happy to furnish my vet's info along w/ my dog's pedigree...she's had DM for about 2 1/2 years now and is still going strong! I've gotten a lot on information from your website, which I believe has helped us enormously! It's great to see so much information in one place...best of luck to any and all who are going through the DM process with their dogs; don't give up hope, even on the bad days! Best wishes to all! Canada How you found our site: Looking up DM Would you recommend our site to others?: Yes Comments: Wow, that is amazing, I felt that I was reading my story with my Wylie. He is a 14 year old Shepherd who was diagnosed about one year ago, and I have gone through almost all the same identical steps, and all the same feelings. But instead of a swimming pool, he went for treadmill in water therapy. He has also been for acupuncture and we are now trying laser therapy to slow down the process. But now he is totally imobile on his own. I use a sling to get him short distances. And we now have a really wonderful cart from Eddies Wheels which he has only had for about 2 weeks now, but he is able to walk (slowly but surely) for about 20 minutes. It has given him his freedom again to a degree. He is able to now sniff lightposts etc, greet other doggies and greet the many people that stop us with questions about his condition and the cart etc. I know that it is probably just a matter of months (if that), but for now he is also just such a happy dog still that we will do everything we can to make his last time with us enjoyable for him. I have not as yet tried all the vitamins, but was just looking into that which is how I stumbled across your site. Thankyou for sharing it all, I can sure relate so very much. Rye, East Sussex in the UK How you found our site: Searching for information about DM Would you recommend our site to others?: Most certainly Comments: On Friday 18th February at 11.20am Ralph my beloved GSD - friend and constant companion for the last 8 and half years, closed his eyes for the last time as he lay his head in my arms and we were as one. So as he fell quickly into a deep sleep he passed peacefully away released from his struggle against the evils of DM. I can’t begin to describe the heart ache and pain watching him over many weeks struggle to fight his losing battle and knowing there was only one end. His brave approach was a real inspiration to observe. I will forever marvel at his courage and determination to always be with me night or day! In a way suffering a similar problems myself helped me to understand his, and together we fought a fight we were never likely to win, but might just gain a little extra time together! It was worth it, we had many precious moments together whether in the house, office or in his favourite woods and the memory of his excitement and his robust barking as I put my boots on for our “stumbling” walk together in the woods will never leave me! He taught me many things, not least to love and treasure his company and to become a real “dog lover!” That was his great achievement! He taught me patience, and the importance of his respect, love and companionship! I can truthfully say never in the 8 plus years did I once lose my temper or raise a finger against him! So having discovered the value of companionship and the love of the GSD breed I feel a better person to give hopefully another good home to the little lady who is to be his successor. Of course there will never be another Ralph – he was just too specially and probably why I have chosen to have a girl! So a long and very wonderful chapter has closed! I have a mass of photos going back to the time he joined me as an 8week old pup, his published dairy to say nothing of his website. My beloved Ralph – we will walk together forever! |
