He was my "firstborn" and the slow progression of this disease is heartbreaking. Your chapters bring back so many of the same things we went through down to the last few minutes when we finally decided it was time for him to be free of the body that made him so unhappy. He is forever in my heart and running free in the gates of heaven! God bless the GSD. I lost my Shepherd Marco to DM in 1998, he was a rescued dog but we estimated him to be about 5 years old. He was such a sweet boy and had had a TERRIBLE life, then just when he finds happiness, DM struck. It still makes me sad and my only consolation is that he was happy for at least a year and a half of his too short life. I work for a Vet and will pass this info on to anyone who has a dog with DM. Thank-you for sharing this info and the pictures and story of your beautiful Jack. Got email for germanshepherd rescue site that put me in touch with proper person. Have started vitamins (E- 2000mg/day, B1complex- 100mg/day, C 1000mg/day. Back right rear foot is only foot not functioning well; hasn't fallen but has stumbled a bit; running differently; not getting off seat as befor. LOOKING FOR PROPER DIET. HAVE NOT CONTACTED "WESTLAB" AS YET. I bury ?"vitamins" in raw ground beef, meatloaf; if pill falls out he won't eat. No pool available - and he never liked going into water. Runs after ball slower than 3 months ago. WHAT ELSE TO DO ? NO VET TESTS SINCE IT SEEMS CERTAIN TO BE DM (might as well spend money on vitamins, etc.) Not painful when I rub/massage both rear legs. Has been a very healthy dog; only significant vet visit was "infection in ear" that vet treated. ANY SUGGESTIONS? Comments: Thank you so much for your website! My dog had surgery for a compressed disk but the surgeon came out saying the disk wasn't that bad and he must have DM. His DM Flash Test came back negative but his neurologist still thinks he has DM. He has the signs and is a lab/shep mix. He is my heart and soul and the sunshine of my life and I don't want to believe he has DM. Does anyone know if the Flash Test could be a negative on a dog that does have DM? Good luck to everybody's dogs ... I hope they all have long, happy lives! They will live in our hearts with love forever! This is also an autoimmune disease that makes the immune system attack the nerves in the body causing pins and needles, loss of feeling and weakness in the arms and legs, in some cases you can lose all the use in your arms and legs and end up bed bound as my husband did. Fortunately even though this is not a very well known disease there is treatment that can help. When my husband was at his worse they tried an intravenous infusion of immunoglobulin which unfortunately, although it works for some people it didn't for him, and as his condition got worse and he was unable to move they decided to give him a plasma exchange to get rid of the bad antibodies, they then gave him steroids and an Immunosuppressive drug called Azathioprine, with all this and physio he is now back on his feet . They have weaned him off the steroids but he will have to take the Azathioprine for quite a few years he also has to take gabapentin to help with the pins and needles he suffers with but apart from that and a little weakness in his legs at least he is up and about. I was wondering as there seems little treatment for dogs with degenerative myelopathy could the above treatment or something similar be applied to dogs and do you think it would help? I know an owner who would be very grateful for any info Entry 133 made on 2005-02-27 22:35:22 Visitor's Name: Lee Botto Homepage URL: None You are from: Cincinnati,Ohio USA How you found our site: Looking for the causes of Degenerative Myelopathy Would you recommend our site to others?: Yes Comments: Your site is a great help to me. |
