Comments: As small breeders of German Shepherds we have encountered GSDM several times now. The illness is not commonly known in the Netherlands, don't ask me why. Neither is the research about GSDM. We have lost one dog to GSDM and at present we are desperatingly trying to prolong the life of another one. Three more dogs from the same litter have GSDM, one has recently died. We fear that our Bess (6 years of age next month) and her brother Balto will soon go the same way. We are medicating to the guidelines of dr. Clemmons. Hopefully we may prolong the life of Bubles as she is in the early stage.

No, it is not! You need to take the time to read through the site. We are here to help, but you also must help yourself...There is an entire page of the site devoted to the message boards with a link to the Boards. There is also a drop down menu on the opening page of this very guestbook you signed, with the DM Message Boards as a choice on the drop down menu!! Additionally, there is also a button on the buttons page of the site (the index page) which also will take you to the page that connects to the Message Boards. In fact, it is quite hard to miss all the links to the boards..The only way you couldnt find it is if you didnt take the time to read through the site. The message boards could not be easier to get to!

Comments: I lost my Weimaraner pal of almost 14 years several years ago, due to DM. He had other problems which complicated it also. The course of the disease in his case was about 2.5 years from the foot-drag stage to where he had more or less complete paralysis of his back end, along with incontinence and the rest. The last couple days, he also lost use of his front legs also, and then refused to eat, which is when I knew it was time.
An interesting note for those researching this is that he also had had HOD as a puppy ( though mild to moderate in course)which is another autoimmune disease. Weims are in fact prone to immune and autoimmune diseases, and it might be interesting to see if the testing would work with them, also. In Max's case, the steroids helped somewhat in the last couple weeks of his life, but things were too far gone by that point.

Comments: judgeslebow,

I can not answer your question " Am I defeating the purpose of the Westlab meds? "

However I can offer a suggestion as to how to aide GSD to have the motivation to get in the car for you...
Mine is also very bull headed always was, I have found that the fav treat, put in on the seat of the car just enough out of reach that they have no choice but to get some paws in the car to reach it.. has always worked for me... works well getting out of the car as well...
Also if you live near a street curb,, I found parking close to the curb, to create a extra step up and down, made it much easier for King,, if not maybe a sturdy box of some sort might help?
Oh his fav treat,,, turkey hot dogs,, I will break off a tiny piece .... thats all it takes...
As for covering the taste of some of the meds,,,
Maybe a ham hock cooked in water,, and just the broth might work? There again I do not know if it would defeat the purpose, but then again if you are having problems getting your GSD to take the meds to begin with,, its sounds like a catch 22 situation,,
Maybe some one else can help with that one...

This is why there is a DM Support Group Message Board- for people to get the help they need. Questions cant be answered through the guest book- there just isnt enough space. There is a link on the website to the message boards. There are many creative minds there that can help with all different situations, and offer advice. I suggest you join the message boards to get questions answered. I know the people there will be happy to help :)

Comments: I left a comment a while back here, first I need to correct myself, I meant DM not MD. Secondly, King has had complications, he also has a very bad tumor on his neck and the vet gave him about a month to live. He will be living a life that owes up to his name for the next few days, then I will allow him to rest in peace, as he rightfully deserves. I just wanted to say thank you again so much for this site, it brought support when there was no one else, and for that I will be for ever grateful...
I hope King and Jack Flash have a chance to meet ;o)

Comments: This is for David & Kristie Frost: Have you had your dog checked for polyradiculoneuritis (coonhound paralysis)? A friend made me aware of this as a possibility, but my vet does think my sweetheart has DM.

Message to all:

3 vets have now diagnosed my 8 year old GSD with DM (regular vet, neurologist, holistic) Awaiting 2nd blood work results from UF. I began the recommended treatment, but he refuses to injest any of the medicines even with the chicken broth added. So, I have been giving the Antiox with sardines which smell worse than the medicine and adding other meds to regualr feeding. Am I defeating the purpose of the Westlab meds? Other than the clear liquid medicines, he somehow detects every small amount of tofu, every capsule, gelcap, tablet, herb, etc. in his food and refuses to eat unless is just chicken/turkey and brown rice with the small amounts of broccoli, carrot and spinich. Any suggestions? He is also refusing to walk as much as he should. He is 116 lbs and very strong (minded) and this disease seems to be evolving rapidly. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. PS, I am only caretaker and can no longer help him into car. I have been taking him for acupuncture every other week, but although nothing, including that, seems to be helping, my vet has agreed to make a house call to continue the acupuncture.
